Small tree or large shrub. The most striking difference with the species being the leaves. These are beautifully golden yellow and as a rule have red leaf stalks, which gives a nice contrasting effect. 'Auratum' is an old female cultivar found and named in 1891 by Späth (Berlin). It is still an attractive tree, especially for application in parks, on squares and in gardens. The tree grows both on wet and dry sites. It has a deep rooting main root which branches out strongly. Sometimes this plant is known by its cultivar name of 'Odessanum'. The real A. negundo 'Odessanum' strongly resembles 'Auratum', but should have a more regular shaped crown. Plants that are sold under the name 'Odessanum', are always A. negundo 'Auratum'.
