Abies veitchii Veitch fir

Pinaceae

Abies veitchii Veitch fir

Large conifer with an upright, narrow pyramidal crown that can grow to over 25 m tall. The crown has a regular shape. Young twigs are reddish brown to brownish green and the bark is grey and smooth. The needles feel soft, they are 1.5 to 3 cm long, glossy dark green on top. On the underside of the needles two pure white stomatal stripes are visible. The needles are attached brush-like around the upper side of the twig and all point forwards. The narrow cylindrical cones are bluish purple. The species name refers to John Gould Veitch who founded the famous Veitch tree nursery. He ‘discovered’ this species in 1861 on Mt. Fuji, Japan. Graceful conifer with an intensely green needle colour that is suitable for parks and large gardens. Grows on any fertile, well-drained soil that is neutral to light acidic.
