High Tech Campus Eindhoven is the smartest square kilometre in the Netherlands and is the home to 150 companies and institutes. The construction of this campus, located on the south side of Eindhoven took a number of years and the surrounding outdoor space was also built in phases over a period of around five years, from 2002 to 2008. Architect Cor Geluk of Juulink [+] Geluk landscapers chose greenery which seamlessly merged with the existing environment. South of Eindhoven, the soil is largely sandy and is a home mainly to indigenous oaks, birches and pines. All three of these were reflected in his plans. Large areas were filled with Betula pendula saplings to form little forests and groups of Pinus nigra nigra were planted at various locations. Six to eight rows of oaks were planted along the long main connecting route for slow traffic. Although the hundreds of oaks came from a single batch, they were planted in different years. Whereas the first trees were supplied with stem girth of 20-25, the rest continued to grow at the nursery. When the last trees with stem girth of 35-40 had been delivered and the project completed, all the trees were the same size, creating a beautifully uniform avenue.
