Directly adjacent to the extremely busy Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station, we find the Hoekenrodeplein. This square forms an important link between the ArenA Boulevard and the Amsterdam Poort shopping centre. Work on the redevelopment started in 2011. The idea was for Hoekenrode to become the new heart of the city of Amsterdam South East. To begin with, the building surrounding the square was completely renovated and now houses a hotel and several catering outlets with terraces. Landscape architects karres+brands were commissioned to design the square and were instructed to include traffic, accommodation and events functions. In 2013-2015 the Hoekenrodeplein was furnished with new paving, natural stone seating, distinctive lighting and greenery. Van den Berk Nurseries took charge of the green elements in the form of sixteen large Metasequoia glyptostroboides with a 150 cm stem girth and a height of around fifteen metres. The trees were delivered at the beginning of 2014 including three-year aftercare and a guarantee. Pius Floris Amsterdam took care of the execution. It can be seen in the photos that the trees are well established. Partly due to their size, the newly planted trees immediately gave the square a pleasantly green appearance. Photos: Karres+Brands
