Tree versus shrub
A tree is a woody plant with a stem and a crown. Otherwise, there is no one definition of a tree. Most definitions also mention height (at least 4 m) and having just one stem. A shrub or bush is a woody plant which branches off just above or already in the ground into various branches, which can be vary in thickness. There is no single stem. A multi-stem tree combines elements of both trees and shrubs. The starting point is a tree, but as a result of human intervention of natural coincidence, it also haves the characteristics of a shrub. But only some, because there are still certain differences. A multi-stem tree does branch off directly above the ground, but the stems are clearly recognizable and the bifurcation on the stems usually starts higher up compared to shrubs. A multi-trunk tree can also reach a bigger height than a shrub. The sizes of multi-stem trees are indicated as height and width measurements, if necessary with an indication of the number of stems.
The advantages of multi-stem trees
Some multi-stem trees have the advantage over shrubs that they are very open in structure at ground level, so that you can see through them. This makes them suitable for areas which should retain their openness. For the same stem circumference, multi-stem trees have a larger foliage mass than regular trees. This ensures a higher environmental value and good shade. It also has aesthetic advantages, as it 'fills up' an area more. Many designer and garden architects find the habit of multi-stem trees very attractive because of their free and more whimsical shape. They use them as image modifying elements in larger public spaces.
