Team of nine
“I have been working in the nursery since April 1960. I trained
as a horticulturalist, specialising in tree cultivation. This year,
2007, that will be 47 years ago! A long time, and I am still
learning. We used to do almost everything manually. Now we
have machines that take some of the work out of the hands of
my team. We are a nine-strong team, and two or three temporary
employees help out in the spring. Together, we work 40
hectares of land. They are all hard workers who take good care
of the plants all year round, so that they can be at their most
beautiful in the autumn and spring, ready to be dug up and
shipped.”
Low drop-out percentage
“I am proud of the fact that our rhododendrons came through
the first difficult year at our clients in good health. Our nursery
has an unprecedentedly low drop-out percentage, and that is
striking, certainly because the weather has become increasingly
extreme in the last few years. Important factors in the
selection of a type or variety are the location, the size and the
soil characteristics in the garden.
Fifty years of cultivation
“I see a sunny future! Rhododendrons are having a massive
comeback and are currently extremely fashionable. If my
health permits I will certainly continue working at the nursery
until 2010. Then I will have done fifty years and I think I can
take things a little easier without feeling guilty.”
