Swinging trees
They have already been discovered by a number of garden designers and they have already been shown on the Dutch TV program ‘Eigen Huis & Tuin’ (Own Home and Garden): the ‘swinging’ trees from Van den Berk Nurseries. This is about roof trees with a bend (swing) in the stem. This unusual stem gives the trees an ornamental appearance and allows the trees to be used in different ways.
Ordinary roof trees are often placed on terraces. Naturally this is possible with these trees but because the tree stems do not stand straight under the roof, it is also possible to plant them on the edge of a terrace. This is especially attractive for small gardens. When a number of trees are positioned behind one another, this creates form and structure in a garden. Together with a combination of modern materials, they can form a striking green feature in an otherwise austere, low-maintenance garden. They are also lovely in containers and when the trees are placed across from each other, they create a contemporary pergola.
THE SWING ®, as the tree has been named by Van den Berk, is available in two species: Carpinus betulus THE SWING ® and Platanus acerifolia THE SWING ®. The trees have been carefully trained and pruned for years in order to obtain their current shape. They are available with stem girths of 18-20, 20-25, 25-30 and 30-35. Only the roof of the tree has to be maintained in the future. The stem is sufficiently thick to retain its shape. THE SWING ® is available exclusively from Van den Berk Nurseries.
