University Utrecht

Utrecht University wished to plant a large number of Pterocarya fraxinifolia around a number of new construction projects. The planting of the trees was conducted in 2 phases. The first trees were planted in the 1997-1998 season.

To maintain uniformity, the trees selected for the second phase were of the same size that the trees in phase 1 had become. These phase 2 Pterocarya’s were planted last season and cannot be distinguished from the trees placed earlier.

Westergasfabriek Amsterdam

A new city park has been created on the site of the former gas factory in the borough of Westerpark in Amsterdam. The Gustafson Porter firm of architects in London, UK, created the design and selected Van den Berk Nurseries as the supplier. We supplied all the plants, consisting of bulbs and tubers, aquatic plants, perennials, grasses, ferns, shrubs, conifers and trees. The first delivery took place in the spring of 2002 and the entire project was completed in early 2005.

Meerhoven Eindhoven

We supplied the trees and shrubs for the roof of the parking garage of the shopping centre under construction in the district of Meerhoven in Eindhoven. The architect selected both solitaire and standard trees of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris). An 80-ton telescopic crane and a 42 metre boom were required to plant the trees in the newly built neighbourhood.
For the standard trees, use was made of various thicknesses of trees in order to create a varied overall appearance. The architect selected an evergreen variety, which means that the streets look more or less the same in any season.

Moreover, these trees do not shed their leaves and are very appropriate to the surroundings.

Het Dak Breda

Headoffice Interpolis, Tilburg

The head office of Interpolis is located in Tilburg. It is bordered by a garden covering approximately 2 hectares. The garden is separated from the surroundings by holly hedges and a steel fence with a holly leaf pattern.

The garden contains elongated water features, varying in size from 20 to 85 square metres, with varied angular designs that form a strong and constantly changing perspective.

In addition, the large slate slabs arranged like roof tiles form an elongated platform adjacent to the office building. Every spring, this platform is decorated by the white blossom on the Magnolia loebneri 'Merril' bushes supplied by Van den Berk Nurseries that creates a surrealistic scene on the angular slate plateau that is seen from both the building and the garden.

Noorder Dierenpark Emmen

The Noorder Dierenpark (Noorder Zoo) wants a green image. A large number of evergreens were planted in the park and animal enclosures during the 2003/2004 season. A number of larger Quercus palustris were selected for the elephant enclosure. These bog oaks are linked to each other and protected with an electrified fence.

This method is extremely effective and the enclosure has regained its natural look. The trees rapidly created the shadow that the elephants needed. Van den Berk Nurseries supplied a great many varieties for the entire zoo, including Pinus nigra subsp. nigra, Pinus mugo ‘Mughus’, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus sylvestris and Tsuga canadensis.
