Transport and logistics
Van den Berk Nurseries has its own logistics department that is responsible for the careful professional loading and delivery of trees and shrubs. During the delivery season, 25 to 30 trailers leave the company every day to deliver trees throughout Europe.
Variable sizes
In order to transport a tree safely and without damage, expert knowledge of haulage, volumes and distances is required, but so is expert knowledge of trees. The transport of very large trees is a speciality. For instance, one has to take into account the fragility of branches. Plus the width that a tree is going to have when it’s tied up for transport must be estimated beforehand because 50 cm can make a lot of difference.
Netherlands
The logistics department operates inside the Netherlands and Belgium mostly with its own transport. The Van den Berk drivers are specialised in transporting and unloading trees. They always carry along equipment that enables them to unload the trees safely and without damage, in the event that the equipment is not on hand at the unloading location. In the case of very heavy trees, at some locations and in consultation with the logistics department, they can unload directly into the planting hole. Naturally you will have had to prepare the planting hole ahead of time.
Export
Van den Berk delivers to 25 countries in Europe. That means a lots of different regulations and documents Specialised transporters for each country work in the Van den Berk logistics department. They take care of the transport permits and know country’s practices and regulations. We work with a number of ‘preferred suppliers’ who always have a detached trailer near the company. This means regular loading and drivers don’t have to wait. That makes a difference to the costs, which means the transport can be offered at a competitive price. Naturally customers can organise their own transport. In that case too, the logistics department assures correct processing and careful loading of the trees.
Calling for an order
Digging up, tying up, loading and transport require careful planning, especially when large trees are involved. In order to guarantee smooth delivery, customers are requested to call for orders at the logistics department approximately two weeks before delivery. Partial deliveries can also be made, if requested in advance.
